Farmyard News Rooster crows about Art in the barn Plans are being finalized for our annual and much anticipated “This Show’s For Ewe!” farm art-in-the-barn show. 5,000 brochures advertising this “best kept secret in the Valley” will soon find their way onto store counters, brochure racks and into people’s hands. We have a great line up of fine art, artisans and demonstrations around the farm, gardens, music and great food. Mark Father’s Day weekend on your calendar June 17th and 18th, and make sure you plan to come and see us to join in the fun! Cows go onto pasture and show off their calves We have had a great season of calving, all of our Dexter cattle as well as “old Sophus” have given us healthy young calves which are growing well and enjoying the sweet spring grasses in the pasture. Lambs heavily into gambolling The bright sunny weather this spring has put a spring into the play of the lambs. Our neighbours and people driving by have enjoyed seeing the lambs gambolling through the fields, playing tag and chase, and celebrating each sunny day. No more kidding for rare goats The extremely rare San Clemente Island goat herd at Cowichan Bay Farm has done it again! Heidi gave birth to a single beautiful goat kid named Sunrise, while Amity, never to be outdone promptly had triplets just to show she could. All the babes being born for this year, mommas turned to serious things like head butting lessons and the climbing-on-top-of-piles-of-dirt drills. These delightful pets will help increase the size of the gene pool of this rare breed as they become old enough to go to other farms for breeding. Fox in the hen house prepares feast Leslie Fox, also known as “The Chicken Whisperer” who joined us last year in our pasture raised poultry production is doing a great job raising early spring chickens in the greenhouse on veggie mix and sprouted whole organic grains. Having had such as successful summer in ‘99 with the birds, we were determined to also raise the best possible winter and early spring chickens by providing them with lots of natural lights and the greens from a variety of fresh sprouted grains each day. The quality of these birds is exceptional and are ready to try at our farm gate and at selected restaurants. With the warm weather arriving, we will be introducing the pasture raised poultry to their summer R.V’s so they may fully enjoy the benefits of the great outdoors. Fresh chicken is available every two weeks, frozen chicken and chicken specialties are available just about any time, please call us! Cowichan Bay Farm in hot water with Saltwater Moon Chef Kirk Brown and Cowichan Bay Farm have teamed up to create a Jewish mother’s favourite comfort food. Newly released, our “Chicken Soup For The Bowl” is chock full of pasture raised poultry, naturally raised vegetables and fresh herbs. This delicious quick and hearty meal is available from the farm, Saltwater Moon restaurant in Cowichan Bay, and at selected other locations. UFO sighted near Cowichan Bay Drawn by the delicious aroma of something cooking, a hungry traveller asked “what is the U.F.O?” (unidentified frying object). Chef Kirk Brown replied “why that’s the best eatin’ rootin’ tootin’ high falutin’ sausage on the market today. Our Cowichan Bay Farm all pure (no beaks or feet) pastured poultry sausage is available at Saltwater Moon on special menus and at Cowichan Bay Farm. A good brake for the Maple Leaf Many locals will see the farm’s 1940 Chevrolet Maple Leaf on the road again soon. The fire engine red 2.5 Ton flat deck is getting fixed up with better braking so that it will be out and about advertising the pasture raised poultry and the farm art show in the community. Watch for us and wave!
